What Is Percentage Difference?
Percentage difference is used to compare two values when neither value is treated as the original or starting value. It expresses the difference between the two values as a percentage of their average.
Percentage Difference Formula
To calculate percentage difference, find the absolute difference between the two values and divide it by the average of the two values. Then multiply by 100.
|Value 1 − Value 2| ÷ ((|Value 1| + |Value 2|) ÷ 2) × 100
Percentage Difference Example
Suppose the two values are 100 and 120. The difference is 20 and their average is 110.
Average = (100 + 120) ÷ 2 = 110
Percentage Difference = 20 ÷ 110 × 100
Percentage Difference ≈ 18.18%

Percentage Difference vs Percentage Change
Percentage difference compares two values without treating either value as the starting point. Percentage change, however, normally compares a new value with a specific original value.
